そして、そこで彼に差し出されたのはまるでパーティーと勘違いしてしまいそうな豪勢な食事であった。どれも、貴族は口に合わないなどと文句を言って食べず、残った食材を改めて調理したのだという。 厨房の中央に位置するテーブルの上に並べられたそれらを、椅子に座って黙々と47は口に運んでいく。 彼の隣では、この厨房の料理長のマルトーと名乗った大柄な男が47に様々な質問を投げかけた。 「じゃあ、47よ。アンタはいきなり訳も分からないままここに召喚されて、そんであの貴族の使い魔をやらされてるのか。そりゃあ、大変だわ」 マルトーは、何とも分け隔てなく47と会話をする。それは、久しぶりの平民との出会いに喜んでいるのだと、47には直ぐに分かった。 そして、彼が貴族に対してあまり良い感情を抱いていない事も。 47はその間、自分から話をする事は無かったが、空腹が満たされる頃に至ってたった一つだけ彼らに問うた。 「平民と貴族の違いというのは、何だ」 「アンタ、それも知らねぇのか。ま、要するに魔法を使える奴が貴族で、そうでない奴が平民だな。俺は勿論平民だ。それで、この世を治めているのは貴族って訳だ」 「……随分、横暴だな」 「おお!まさにその通りよ。アンタ話が分かるな。また飯抜きにされたら何時でも来い。今度はワインでも用意しておくぜ」 マルトーは何とも饒舌に言葉を続ける。今まで溜まりに溜まっていたものを全て吐き出すが如く。47は別段、自身の感情の変化は無かったが、それでも、オルトーの話にあわせて時折頷いた。 ※※※ さて、食事と会話を終えて広場の洗濯をしていた場所に戻った47は、其処でマントが所々破けたルイズを見て、言葉に詰まった。 俯いたままの表情は、彼女が朝食の後の授業で何かしらの失敗――十中八九魔法に関する事――をした事を暗に示している。 では、此処で彼女に励ましの言葉を投げかけるべきか。今朝方の彼女の様子を考慮すれば否だ。 「ついて来なさい」 ところが、彼女は現状の自身について何も語らぬままそう一言言い、踵を返す。 彼女の行く先を見れば、広場で彼女と同じ様にマントを纏った生徒達が円テーブルを囲って何とも楽しそうに話をしている光景が見えた。 時に、貴族はこうして心に余裕を持たせるのだと、歩きながらルイズは細々を語る。どうも、普段から失敗をしているという話から考えてみても、今の彼女はそれ以上に悔やんでいる様に47には見えた。 「……魔法など、手段の一つにしかすぎないと思うのだがな」 47は、まるで呟く様にそんな言葉を漏らす。 手段の一つ。それは、長く暗殺という仕事に身を投じて来た彼自身良く知っていた事だった。 ターゲットを暗殺するにしても、狙撃、近距離からのワイヤーによる絞殺。毒殺。転落死といった事故死に見せかける等、幾らでも方法はある。 魔法も、この世界においては優位にたつ条件なのは間違いなかった。だが、それは、少なくとも必須ではない様に47には思えて仕方が無かった。 ルイズは、47の声に一瞬だけ肩を震わせたが、反論する様子も無い。 やがて、賑やかな声が聞こえてくると、何処か適当なところで静かにしていてと告げ、その中に入っていった。 それは、まるで自身も貴族なのだと言い聞かせている様にも見え、背中からは悲痛な声が今にも聞こえてきそうだった。 しかし、47は彼女を止める権限など持ち合わせていない事を察すると、彼女の言う通り、洗濯していた時と同じ様に隅の目立たない所の、彼女の様子を伺える位置を陣取る。 ルイズを見ると、青い髪の少女を連れた、赤い髪の少女と何かを言い合っていたようだが、流石に聞き取る事が出来なかった。 時折、赤い髪の少女が47の方を見てウィンクしていたようだったが、直後の赤くなったルイズを見やり、無視する。 「あら、ミスタ47。またお一人ですか」 すると、聞き覚えのある声が彼に耳に入った。声のした方を向くと、其処にはお盆を携えたシェスタが居た。 どうやら、メイドの仕事というのは極めて広く、多いらしい。47は彼女の問いかけに頷くと、一言、そう指示されたと付け加えた。 「では、何か飲み物でも如何ですか。」 シェスタは軽く笑みを浮かべる。既に此処に嘗ての脅威は無いと判断していた47には特に拒む理由はなかった。 「そうだな。では、紅茶はあるか」 「はい、では、何にしましょう」 丁寧にも、シェスタは用意出来る紅茶を一通り告げる。だが、やはり、その中に47に馴染みある種類は無かった。 暫く悩んだ末、47は、では君が一番好きなものにしてくれ、と頼む。 微かに、シェスタの頬が紅くなったようだったが、47は知る由もない。 一礼した後、シェスタは近くのテーブルのティーカップに紅茶を注ぐと、直ぐに戻って来た。 「手慣れたものだな。この仕事は長いのか」 「ええ。平民の私が、こうして貴族の方達の世話を出来る。光栄な事ですよ」 「……そうか。ところでその残りの紅茶は」 「あ、すみません、先程別の方に茶を用意する様にと言われまして」 「成る程」 それきり、彼女は急ぎ足で別のテーブルへと歩いていった。 47は、彼女の注いだ紅茶を味わう。彼の居た世界には無かった味だった。 しかし、程よい甘み、その奥からじわりとくる苦みは、直ぐに彼の味覚を刺激する。 47は特に砂糖やレモンと言った注文は付けていなかったが、彼女は47を見て、そういったものは不要だと判断したのだろう。 だが、二口目に彼が紅茶を飲もうとした時、周囲が突然静けさに包まれた。 何事かと顔を上げると、シェスタが誰かに詰め寄られていた。そして、その誰かに、彼は見覚えがあった。昨晩、道を尋ねたあの金髪の少年だった。 「まさか、紅茶を間違えでもしたのか」 少年の前には、ティーカップが置かれていた。先程47の尋ねたそれに、ほぼ間違いないだろう。 であれば、彼女にそう迷惑をかけていられない。情をかける、という表現が一番近かったのであろうが、どうもこの時、何故そんな行動に出たのかははっきり覚えていなかった。 ただ、紅茶の礼がしたかったのかもしれない。何より、魔法が使えるというだけで使えぬ者を卑下にする者が気に入らなかったのかもしれない。 47は彼女達に近づく。金髪の少年は、近づいてくるスキンヘッドの男に、またも怪訝そうに眉をひそめたが、47の手にしていたティーカップを見ると、にやりと汚い笑みを浮かべた。 「なんだ、ゼロの使い魔如きが貴族と同じものを飲んでいるのか。随分、偉そうだねぇ」 「そうか、それは済まなかった。ところで、何故彼女を責め立てるのだ」 「ふん、君には関係のない事だろう。平民はさっさと下がりたまえ」 「お前の、その紅茶と、俺の持っている紅茶を彼女の手違いで間違えたのかもしれないと思ってな。もしそうだったら、俺にも非がある」 47は、シェスタを横目で見やる。涙目を浮かべていた。余程、酷い事でも言われたのだろう。 47はこの少年の名前も知らない。しかし、彼の心中の歪みは、口調や話す内容から直ぐに分かった。 「つまり、君はこのメイドを庇うという事だな」 案の定、少年は怒りの矛先をシェスタから、47へと変更する。 「つまりは、そういう事だ」 47は、多くを語らず彼の質問を肯定する。 どうも、彼は女性賛美主義の気があるらしい。目の色が若干変わったのを、47は見逃さなかった。 「良いだろう。君は貴族と平民の立場が分かっていないようだ。この僕、ギーシュ・ド・グラモンが教えてあげるよ。一対一の、決闘でね!」
